Water for Life: Cyclone Ditwah Flash Appeal by UN-Habitat
23 December 2025, Colombo, Sri Lanka Cyclone Ditwah impacted 2.2 million people across Sri Lanka, due to torrential rains, landslides, and severe flooding. As a result, water infrastructure has collapsed – 413,000 household water connections are disrupted, 538 rural schemes are down, and 45 sewer treatment plants are non-functional. Vulnerable communities including women and children face heightened risk of waterborne diseases and other health emergencies as they return to their damaged homes.
UN-Habitat is mobilizing an emergency response to restore access to clean water and prevent secondary health crises. Donations will be sent to UN-Habitat through Japan Habitat Association and will be utilized for emergency WASH response activities.
We urgently seek support to implement life-saving WASH interventions
- Provide water and sanitation facilities in temporary shelters, and welfare centres
- Install temporary water tanks for displaced families
- Clean and rehabilitate damaged wells, toilets, and WASH facilities in homes, schools, and clinics
- Repair pipelines and rural community-managed water supply schemes.
- Provide water testing kits to ensure safe drinking water
- Promote hygiene awareness and distribute hygiene kits to prevent water-borne diseases and hygiene supplies for women and girls
Your contribution can make a real difference to the lives of affected families who need it most.
