UN-Habitat, in collaboration with KOICA, has successfully completed the construction of 10 community toilets with equipped with continuous water supply at the Glenanore estate, catering specifically to the residents of line rooms in the Viharagala GN Division under the Haldummulla Divisional Secretariat Division. In a momentous ceremony held on 28th December 2023, the beneficiaries received the much-needed facilities, marking a significant step towards fostering improved sanitation behaviors within the community.

The construction of the toilets was undertaken by the Glenanore Estate Workers Housing Cooperative Societies (EWHCS) with the technical guidance provided by the UN-Habitat technical team. It is noteworthy that the construction was successfully completed within four months, thanks to the in-kind contribution from the communities. The toilets were designed with features that include continuous and uninterrupted water supply facilitated by overhead tanks and four units are equipped with commodes.

These community toilets are intended to serve a total of 120 individuals from 20 families encompassing both nuclear and extended family members. The responsibility for maintenance will be overseen by the estate well fare officer, ensuring the proper care and upkeep of the facilities.

The toilets, a crucial additional to the infrastructure, are poised to bring about a transformative impact on the lives of those residing in line rooms. Acknowledging this milestone, Mr. Gayan, the estate manager, expressed his gratitude, noting that this support from UN-habitat is unprecedented during his tenure. The funding assistance from KOICA played a pivotal role in making this initiative a reality showcasing the commitment of international agencies to uplift marginalized communities.

The provision of cluster toilets not only addresses basic sanitation needs but also aligns with sustainable and eco-friendly practices. This strategic move by UN-Habitat and KOICA reflects a holistic approach to community development, fostering not only immediate improvements but also paving the way for long term positive changes in sanitation habits.

In essence, the handover of these 10 toilets signifies more than just infrastructural development. It symbolizes a collaborative effort to instill lasting positive changes in sanitation behaviors creating a healthier and more sustainable living environment for the residents of the Viharagala GN Division of the Glenanore estate.
