Foundation Laying Ceremony to Construct Preschools

September 2013, Northern Province, Sri Lanka. Foundation stone laying ceremonies for the construction of two preschools took place at the Kandawalai DS Division in Killinochchi District on Tuesday 3rd September 2013.

Key stakeholders of this programme including the District Secretary of Killinochchi District, Ms.Rupavathi Ketheeswaran, and the Divisional Secretary of Kandawalai DS Division, Mr.S.Mukunthan participated at the event.

The preschools are being constructed under an infrastructure development project funded by the Government of Japan. A total allocation of US$ 4 million has been provided by the Government of Japan for this project which is being implemented by UN-Habitat in partnership with Community Based Organisations.

On Wednesday 4th September 2013, UN-Habitat launched a tree planting campaign in the Northern Province entitled ‘Trees for Tomorrow’. The first tree under this initiative was planted by Ms.Rupavathy Ketheeswaran, District Secretary of Killinochchi District at the new building site proposed for the Killinochchi District Secretariat. UN-Habitat intends to plant 200,000 trees during the next two years through this project.
